Statua della Libertà
Guardian of the Republic
The Statue of Liberty of San Marino is located in the capital of the city-state on the Piazza della Libertà in front of the Palazzo Pubblico, the seat of government, and appears as a guardian. While she stretches forward her right hand protectively, she holds the flag of San Marino in her left. On her head the figure wears a crown with the three famous towers of San Marino. With a determined expression and one foot forward, she symbolizes the freedom of the Republic.
Construction and inauguration
The statue is made of white Carrara marble and was designed by the Italian sculptor Stefano Galletti (1832-1905). It was commissioned by the then Duchess of Rancidello, Otilia Heyroth Wagener. The German countess donated the statue to San Marino after its completion in 1876 and, in gratitude, the government appointed her “Duchess of Acquaviva”. The statue was inaugurated on 30th September 1876. Construction of the Palazzo Pubblico did not begin until almost 10 years later.

The obverse is designed vertically and depicts the statue. The horizontal reverse shows a view of the Second Tower and the “Witches' Pass” (Passo delle Streghe).
