Eiffel Tower
At 312 meters, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure in the world from its opening in 1889 until 1930. Today, it measures 330 meters including its antennas.
World's most visited structure
With up to seven million visitors per year, the Eiffel Tower is considered the world's most visited structure with an admission fee. It is not only a landmark of France but also an architectural icon and a symbol of modernity. In addition to its function as a tourist attraction, the tower is used to broadcast radio and television programs. In 1921, the first public radio program in Europe was broadcast from the Eiffel Tower.
Construction history of the “Iron Lady”
Designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (1832–1923), it was originally built as a spectacular entrance gate to the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Construction took two years. Although the huge iron structure was initially controversial among the population, it gained unparalleled cultural significance after its opening. Gustav Eiffel built an apartment below the top, where he lived, documented meteorological observations, and received guests such as Thomas Edison. The “Iron Lady” (la dame de fer) has been listed as a “monument historique” since 1964.
