East Side Gallery

The East Side Gallery in Berlin is a unique monument. In 1990, carried by the euphoria following the fall of the Berlin Wall, an open art gallery was created on a 1,316-meter-long section of the Berlin Wall. 118 artists from 21 countries painted the wall surfaces and produced more than 100 works reflecting hope, criticism, and memories of the division and the end of the Cold War.

Among the most famous motifs is Dmitri Vrubel's “My God, Help Me to Survive this Deadly Love” — the iconic fraternal kiss between GDR head of state Erich Honecker and his Soviet counterpart Leonid Brezhnev, which became an international symbol of political change. The gallery was listed as a historic monument in November 1991. It thus stands not only as an art project, but also as an official memorial to freedom and reconciliation.

In the years that followed, the East Side Gallery underwent repeated restoration work and was the subject of controversy. Weather, vandalism, and development plans sparked discussions about preservation, originality, and the rights of the artists. Despite these challenges, the East Side Gallery remains a vibrant memorial site, attracting millions of visitors annually and offering an open, colorful chapter in Berlin's history.
