Connecticut
Connecticut is located in the Northeastern United States and belongs to the New England region. While the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes such as the Nipmus, Sequin, Mattabesec and Pequot-Mohegan, the first Europeans were the Dutch, who established the colony of New Netherland around 1614. In the following years, English settlers founded the Connecticut Colony, the Saybrook Colony and the New Haven Colony. The Fundamental Orders adopted in Connecticut and New Haven in 1639 are considered the first constitution in America.
According to legend, the settlers of Connecticut hid their constitution in the trunk of an oak tree to protect it from the new English governor in 1687. Thus, the Charter Oak in Hartford became a symbol of freedom and independence. As one of the Thirteen Colonies, Connecticut participated in the American Revolutionary War and in the formation of the United States government, earning it the nickname "The Constitution State". In 1788, Connecticut was admitted to the Union as the fifth state.
Connecticut got its name from the Connecticut River, which in turn is derived from the Mohegan word "quinetucket", meaning "long, tidal river". The Latin state motto "Qui transtulit sustinet" means "He who transplants, sustains".
New Haven is home to Yale University, which was founded in 1701 and is one of the three oldest institutions of higher education in the United States.

Connecticut Folding Card
Born in Connecticut, P. T. Barnum began his career with exhibitions of the alleged 161-year-old wet nurse of George Washington and a variety of curiosities, such as the "Fiji Mermaid" – actually a monkey torso with a fish tail – or the fake remains of a petrified man presented as the "Cardiff Giant". His circus became world-famous in 1882 with the almost 3.5 meter tall elephant Jumbo. This note from the 50 U.S. States Program depicts a portrait of the circus pioneer, a drawing of Jumbo, the Hartford skyline, the Charter Oak in Hartford, Connecticut's map and motto "OUI TRANSTULIT SUSTINET" (Latin for "He who transplanted sustains"), and the year of admission to the Union.
