Nebraska

Nebraska is located in the Midwest and is the only triply landlocked U.S. state. The landscape of Nebraska is mainly characterized by the rolling hills of the Dissected Till Plains and the prairie of the Great Plains. As one of the largest corn producers in the United States, Nebraska is also called "The Cornhusker State."

Among the various native tribes that inhabited the area before Europeans arrived were the Omaha, Missouria, Ponca, Pawnee, Otoe, and Lakota. After both the Spanish and the French began trading with some of these peoples around 1700, France emerged victorious in the resulting war with the help of its native allies. During the Seven Years' War, however, the territory was ceded back to Spain in 1762. The United States acquired the vast area that included present-day Nebraska through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and created the Territory of Nebraska in 1854. In 1867, Nebraska was admitted to the Union as the 36th state. The original capital was moved from Omaha to Lancaster and renamed in honor of President Abraham Lincoln after his assassination in 1869. The state motto of Nebraska is "Equalitiy before the law".

Chimney Rock rises 325 feet (99 m) in the air in western Nebraska near Bayard. It already served as a landmark for settlers along the Oregon, California and Mormon Trails in the 19th century.
