Florida

Florida is located in the Southeastern United States, bordering the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the only state in the continental U.S. with a tropical climate and a coral reef. The Everglades National Park is the largest tropical wilderness area in the nation. A vast network of wetlands and forests, it is the most important breeding area for tropical wading birds in North America. Furthermore, it is home to American alligators, American crocodiles and Florida panthers.

The state is named after the Spanish term for Easter, "Pascua Florida", since the peninsula was discovered on Easter Monday in 1513. Native peoples who lived in the area at the time included the Apalachee, the Timucua, the Ais and the Calusa. In 1565, the Spanish founded the colony of St. Augustine, the first European settlement on the U.S. mainland that was permanently inhabited. After the Seven Years' War, Spain ceded Florida to the British in 1763. Following the Revolutionary War, however, the Spanish regained control. In the course of the Seminole Wars (1816–1858), which were the longest and most expensive of all the American Indian Wars, the United States received the territory from Spain in 1819 and in 1845 Florida was admitted to the Union as the 27th state. Its motto, like that of the USA, is "In God We Trust".

Florida is also called the "Sunshine State" and is home to popular tourist destinations such as Walt Disney World Resort or Miami Beach. In addition, the state, especially the Miami metropolitan area, is famous for its architecture, featuring the most Art Deco and Streamline Moderne buildings in the world.

NASA's Kennedy Space Center is located on Merrit Island, northwest of Cape Canaveral. Since 1968, all manned U.S. space shuttles have been launched from the site.

Florida Folding Card

One of the most successful U.S. novelists, Ernest Hemingway received both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize in Literature. He drew much of the inspiration for his stories from true adventures and travels, including as a war correspondent. Between 1931 and 1939, Hemingway lived in a house in Key West, Florida, where he wrote some of his greatest works. He also often went deep-sea fishing or sailing in the Caribbean. His boat "Pilar" is depicted next to a portrait of him on this note from the 50 U.S. States Program. In addition, it shows the Miami skyline, a drawing of a space shuttle, Florida's motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year of admission to the Union.
