Dubai

Dubai

Founded in the 19th century as a fishing village, Dubai has developed into a global trade and finance center in recent decades. Today the city is the political, economical and cultural center of the Emirat of Dubai.

Burj Khalifa

Built between 2004 and 2009 in the center of Downtown Dubai, the Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world at 829.8 meters (2,722 feet). It was designed by American Adrian Smith and named after the then President of the Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in gratitude for his financial support. The building has a total of 57 elevators and 8 escalators. Its tripartite, Y-shaped floor plan was designed to make optimal use of the residential and hotel areas. The cladding system, made of reflective glass panels, is intended to keep the extremely hot summer temperatures out of the building. It was officially opened on 4th January 2010.

Museum of the Future

Another famous landmark in Dubai is the Museum of the Future. The unusual ring-shaped building was designed by South African Schaun Killa and is meant to resemble an eye. Also unique are the windows, designed by artist Matar Bin Lahej in the form of Arabic calligraphy with quotes from Dubai's ruler. The opening took place on 22nd February 2022, because it was a palindrome date (22.02.22).
